Potter Palms and Quails

A quail family took over the back patio for almost a month. Mother quail laid her eggs in a potted palm. She hid herself so well, we didn't notice until our puppies scared her.

When we saw she had 12 eggs in the pot, we let her and her family have the patio. The puppies had to make due with the front yard.

The Father Quail stood guard over his family. Mostly scaring off other quail. This is the second year they have raised their family in this pot, we think the same quail since there are three potted palms in a row and the eggs have been laid in the same pot, even the same area in the pot.

Finally after a month the first baby hatched. The day of the hatching, the Father was pacing nervously. Both this year and last, the father was absent for long periods of time, but at the time of the hatching he was right there to help with the chicks.

The babies quickly fluffed up, after two hours they were chirping loudly.

The Mother and Father stood outside the gate and called to the chicks to jump out of the pot and come join them. Here is one of the babies just after jumping to the ground.

The baby quail one by one jumped out of the pot and ran to the gate, looking for mom and dad.

Finally all of the chicks left the palm and joined the family. The entire quail family left for the desert.

The mother quail laid 12 eggs, ten of them hatched successfully.

After a month, we can let the puppies romp on the patio again.

The pictures were taken from inside the house.. We gave up picture quality for mother and father quail's comfort.

Last year we saw the family often, we hope to see this family again.
